Hot gaming gear: Gaming phones

Every year we test a huge batch of gaming gear to find the winners to suit all budgets. Here are the best gaming phones.

A quick reminder of how we review gaming gear:

  1. We test the main features, including advanced functions and ease of use.
  2. We check the build quality, use of durable materials and smart design.
  3. Finally we consider the price compared with its competitors.
  4. That’s FEATURES + BUILD + PRICE = VALUE.
  5. We also consider the suitability of each product for different kinds of users.

LG V40 ThinQ

In a very tight race, the V40 wins out by besting every other phone on test in graphics capability and also screen quality. The generous 6.4” screen has the highest pixel density under tough Gorilla glass. The whole package is water resistant and military-rated for durability. The sound system, both playback and recording are streets ahead and, despite being a year old is, quite simply, the most phone you can get under R10 000.

Samsung A70

In the A70, you’re getting the biggest screen of all the phones on test here, packed in an extremely thin package that’s easy to handle. On top of that, the massive 4 500 mAh battery is what gets gamers through the day. We count the plastic back cover as an advantage because glass-bodies phones simply break too easily.

Hisense H30

The most affordable option on test with the biggest battery is this Hisense with it’s great 6.5” screen and a serious combination of processing power and graphics capability in the MediaTek P70 chip. It’s got less RAM than the competitors, but you’d never notice. The one-touch Cleaner software is a great tool for keeping the phone running at top speed.

Samsung S10e

It’s a pocket-friendly shape and works great if you don’t have massive paws for hands, but underneath that 5.8” screen, it’s still got all the class-leading processing power and graphics capability of the top-end, full-size S10. It boasts the superior build quality of the S10 series, and its fast-charging capabilities.
