Home security is big business in SA, but as a Tech reader, you don’t have to shell out big bucks if you have a bit of IT smarts. This kit from Yale has almost everything you need to install your own smart alarm system in minutes, not hours.
The various sensors are battery powered and all automatically connect to a simple base station wirelessly, so there is no laborious and unsightly cabling. The base station connects to your home network so that any incidents immediately show up in the Yale Smart Home app on your phone. You will be the first to know if something is going on at your premises.
The base station, which also houses a 40-decibel siren, is equipped with a 9V backup battery, so the alarm remains active and sounds even if there is a power outage or the dreaded load shedding, but you won’t get phone notifications if your router is down, obviously.
You can add in plenty of extras available from Yale, including outdoor video cameras, panic buttons and smoke detectors, and they all connect wirelessly.
The bundle includes two door- or window sensors, a pet-friendly infrared sensor and a second infrared sensor combined with a motion-sensing camera with pics viewable through the phone app. The sensors can be easily mounted using double-sided tape, or screwed down if you’re feeling handy. There is also a keypad to arm and disarm, although this can also be done remotely using the app.
Through the app, you can choose to receive notifications via email, SMS or in-app notifications. There is an initial limit of 50 SMSs, so use these sparingly, and only if you don’t want to leave the app running.
Base station hub with siren, 2 × motion detector (one with camera), 2 × door/ window contact, keypad, R5 500
We were impressed with the simple and efficient installation. Everything worked first time around. Now we are dreading having to eventually change batteries in all the sensors all over the house.
